About Ms. Dawn Fregosa
Ms. Fregosa is a 15 year veteran teacher with over 25 years experience working with high school students. As a 20 year business consultant, real-life learning is second nature. She now holds the exciting position as the Manager of Programs for the Network For Teaching Entreprenurship-NFTE Bay Area. She is an expert in innovation,STEAM, Making, business, finance, marketing and PBL integration into relevant experiential education. She recently spent two years teaching and re-branding the San Leandro Academy of Business and Finance She came to teaching from her former career as a business, marketing and management consultant via the Tech-2-Teachers cohort through Teach For America program.
A self-proclaimed computer nerd, Ms. Fregosa requires students to use technology in their classroom projects. Prior to her successful independent consulting, she was the youngest female entrepreneur / franchisee and president of Mad Science of South Florida. In 2012 she was named Global Enterprising Educator of the year and that same year was recognized by Microsoft as a Global Hero In Education/ NFTE honored her again with the same award in 2016, making her one of the only teacher in the nation to receive this honor twice in a career.
Her first career stemmed from her love of the outdoors. She worked for 8 years as a professional Program Director in Ohio and later, post Hurricane Andrew with the Girl Scouts USA. Her favorite camp was an island-based camp in the Florida Keys where she instructed windsurfing, diving, sailing, snorkeling and led several dolphin interaction and turtle hatching experiences as well. She loves crazy adventures, baseball and is a well-known Giants fan!
Ms. Fregosa gained her Bachelor’s degree in Communications Management from The University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. She also earned minors in English, Fine Arts, Social Work, Geology, and Marketing. Through Teach for America she entered teaching and attended San Jose State University to become credentialed in English and Biology and her MBA is in progress. She also holds a California CTE Credential in Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Business Finance.
A few years abo, Ms. Fregosa left Lighthouse Community Charter school, where she had spent 7 amazing years as the proud founding Biology and Business teacher. She spent 2-13-2014 helping start a new National Academy of Finance (NAF) blended learning Business, Entrepreneurship and Finance Academy at the new Madison Park Academy High School, as well as acting as the k-9 Science Department Chairperson, she then took over Business classes at the California Partnership Academy Career Pathway, The San Leandro Academy for Business and Finance. She is now the NFTE Bay Area Manager of Programs, providing Professional Development, assisting teachers to deliver high quality Entrepreneurship and Business education throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
Ms. Fregosa, known as "Mama Bear," " Frogo" and "Ms. F," is well known for building relationships and producing amazing projects using technology with her students. Her students revel in being a part of the a rigorous, high integrity, engaging learning community. “I want to teach students to be successful, and when they leave my class, not only do I want them to know they are smarter, capable of greatness, but also prepared to be successful in their classes in college, careers and beyond.”
When asked what she enjoys most about teaching she said, “I love seeing students “get it” in my classes. I enjoy teaching, laughter in learning, and I hope that comes out in the preparation and professionalism in my classes, as well as the increased intelligence that my students gain, having had me as a teacher. She deeply believes in the the mission of San Leandro High School's Academy for business and Finance, and is striving to meet goals with the students to gain more notoriety, win more DECA and NFTE competitions, and explore college, career and business opportunities through exciting field trips and excursions. Ms. Fregosa believes that that with hard work and perseverance, all students will be college ready. She believes that all students are teachers and all teachers are students. My classroom credo is, "mutual respect.”
In her spare time she hangs out with her son, Tres and husband, Richard and their 4 cats, two beagles and two turtles. She enjoys travel, especial to tropical destinations; Key West is her happy place! She also is a huge Giants fan, delights in throwing pottery, reading, snorkeling and beach time, swimming and learning new technology. She love talking to people, so national and local business networking is like breathing
